Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

The Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are headed by Dr. (Mrs. C.P. Joshi), Dr. R.J. Batra and Mrs. A.A. Basole respectively. Together, the PCM Departments have a faculty of twenty five with eight Professors, five designated professors and twelve Assistant Professors. Fourteen of the faculty members are Ph.D.s and three others are actively engaged in doctoral research. The areas of expertise of the faculty include mathematical and computational physics, solid state ionics, lamp phosphors, relativity, MHD, heterocyclic chemistry, synthesis of natural products and nuclear chemistry. Close to a hundred research publications in journals of repute reflect the active research engaged in by this faculty. The Physics Department boasts of Mathematica Lab, a computer lab running Mathematica software, set up under the first AICTE project grant to the College. Dr. C. P. Joshi and Dr. S. M. Pande are currently working on an R&D Project on UV Lamp Phosphors, also the first research project in the College, sanctioned by the Indian Council of Medical Research to develop indigenous phosphors usable in UV-theraphy. The Chemistry Department is actively engaged in testing of petroleum products approved by Bureau of Indian Standards. The Mathematics Department handles courses forming the backbone of most engineering branches. Apart from teaching core science courses taken by fresh entrants to the College, the faculty has considerable academic participation in teaching of advanced level courses. Some of the faculty members offer courses to students of MCA degree. Other academic activities carried out by faculty members include development of computer aided educational material, conduct of refresher courses in science-engineering interface areas and expert lectures in neighboring institutions. The faculty also actively participates in affairs of the University through Boards of Studies, Board of Examination, Academic Council and Senate.

Department of Computer Science

Prof. M.B. Chandak heads the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. He has obtained B.E. Computer Technology from Nagpur University and has done his M.E. (Computer Sciences) from Amravati University, Amravati. In order to keep pace with the rapid global developments in information technology, Computer Science Department provides a solid foundation, fundamental principles of the subject to the students.

All above Departments are closely related to each other and share a common set of facilities. The College has IEEE (USA) student chapter and IETE (INDIA) student chapter, which caters to the need of Electronics, EDT, Electronics & Telecommunications and Electrical Departments. The Departments have state-of-art labs including 90 computers, Internet connection and software for PCB design, analog circuit simulation and VLSI design. The total investment in laboratories is Rs. 60 Lakhs. seminar room equipped with multimedia projector is also available at the Department. Large number of students from these Departments have achieved excellent GRE, TOFEL and GATE scores. The Department has witnessed 99.6% GATE, 2340/2400 in GRE and 300/300 TOFEL scores. Students of these Departments have been accepted for PG courses by IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore, VNIT Nagpur, XIM Jamshedpur, Simbiosis, Pune and many foreign universities. Alumni of these Departments can be found in many reputed companies around the globe viz.- Intel (USA), ALTERA (USA), Bell Labs (USA), Infeneon (Singapore), NOKIA (Japan), Phillips, L&T, TCS, Mahindra, WIPRO, to name a few. The alumni also find place in prestigious government organizations like the Air Force, Indian Engineering Services and Indian Revenue Services.

CIVIL ENGINEERING SCENERIO IN FUTURE

Though Civil Engineering is one of the conventional branches in engineering it has still retained its position in the creative and modern world of today. This is due to all-round development in housing, urban development, transportation (roads, railways, airports, Docks, Harbors, bridges), water resources, water supply and treatment, sewage treatment. Along with these core sectors of civil engineering and allied sectors like thermal and Hydropower (generation, transmission, distribution), off-shore projects, mining projects, telecom sector, space program, nuclear power plants are also growing. All these fields invariably need services of civil engineers.

The contribution of civil engineers to society is undoubted and well established. The houses that we live in, the water that we drink, the water that we use for our agriculture (through dams & canals), the roads, railways & bridges, recreation and tourist places are due to dedicated & sincere efforts of civil engineers. The versatile branch of civil engineering is often referred to as evergreen branch as all new graduates do find some kind of job or more often entrepreneurs. The branch offers a wide range of career option viz.

  1. The students can get coveted central government jobs in the department of Railways, CPWD, Military Engineering Services (MES), BRDO (Border Roads Development Organization), Posts & Telegraph etc. These are all class I positions and the selection is through UPSC Engineering Services Exam.
  2. Similarly the prestigious jobs in state government departments are in PWD, Irrigation and Water Supply Departments (Now called Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran). These posts are filled at Class-I and Class-II levels through MPSC services exam. All other state & central departments like Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporations (MSRTO), Town Planning, Zila Parishads, Municipal Corporation, Improvement Trusts (Like NIT) and Public sector undertakings like BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, IOCL, BPCL, Electricity boards (Like MSEB) need services of Civil Engineers.
  3. Self-entrepreneurship for a civil engineer is easier compared to other branches. A graduate Civil Engineer can start his own business as a consultant, design engineer, contractor etc.

Lot of development is taking place in software related to civil engineering projects, design etc. The students interested in software can also find placement in this line.
