About Department


To be a department of inspired learning that encourages the building of strong knowledgebase, inquisitiveness and critical thinking amongst students.


To educate students for understanding chemical principles involved in engineering systems and also to make them aware about the global changes in the environment and its impact on the society.

Engineering Chemistry is taught in First / Second Semester of B. E. The basic objective of this subject is to develop necessary skills and abilities to succeed in engineering education. The emphasis is given on knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and its applications in industry, environment and social context. The course content includes water quality management, environmental pollution, corrosion, lubricants, fuels and combustion and recently developing nano-chemistry area. Environmental Studies course, a mandatory course for under-graduate is taught to the students of third and fourth semesters of engineering to create a concern for our environment that will trigger pro-environmental action.

The department has a newly developed Chemistry Laboratory, Departmental library and research laboratory. Five research students have been awarded with Ph. D. degree. Presently, five doctoral students are working on their research in the Department.

Applied Chemistry Laboratory is recognized testing centre for petroleum products from Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India. The department also undertakes analysis of water samples and cement, and other engineering materials.


The department has two Associate Professors and five Assistant Professors and majority of them with doctoral degrees. The average experience of most of the faculty members of the departments is more than 10 years.
Faculties of the department are actively engaged in research and other important assignments of the Institute. The areas of specialization and research interest of the faculty members are synthetic organic chemistry, physical, polymer and environmental chemistry. The faculty members have authored 37 published research papers in the Scopus Indexed journals. One of the faculty members has authored text books on Applied Chemistry for engineering students. Beside this, faculty member have published two patents in the Indian Patent Journal, Govt. of India.
The faculty members contributed in the Institution as member of ‘Admission Committee’, ‘Academic Council’, ‘Board of Studies’ , ‘Member of Local Management Committee’, ‘Officer In-Charge, Training and Placement Cell’, and different ‘Examination Committees’ of the Institute, etc.

Course Outcomes of Engineering Chemistry (CHT 101)

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be familiar with and be able to gain:

  1. Knowledge of water and waste water analysis, boiler water chemistry and desalination of salty/sea water enables the engineers to overcome the difficulties to a larger extent that often come across in the field of i) Civil engineering, ii) Public health and environmental engineering iii) Ocean engineering iv) thermal and electrical power generation sectors and process engineering.
  2. Better understanding to surmount over the difficulties faced in the selection of proper and economical constructional materials to be used; the impact of change in the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the concrete type composites due to variation in their chemical compositions.
  3. Better insight in the selection of materials by modern technologies which demand with unusual combination of properties that cannot be met by any of the conventional metal alloy, ceramic and polymeric materials; viz in aerospace, military warfare materials, nuclear installations, electrical and electronic components/devises, and in the emerging multidisciplinary field of nanotechnology, etc..
  4. There are many different ways in which the abundant energy around us can be harnessed converted and exploited for our use. The ability to harness and its use for constructive purposes as economically as possible is a challenge before mankind. Under these circumstances it is imperative that sustainable energy sources with less attardent problems are developed to meet the ever increasing energy demand. The course content related to energy recourses incorporated in the syllabus fulfills the basic requirement for having acquaintance with the field. Application of knowledge of conventional sources of energy used in thermal, electrical, nuclear power, generations; harnessing new vistas to upgrade and uplift unconventional sources of energy.
  5. Understand and calculate stoichiometry, and the role of elementary reactions involved in combustion process.
  6. To apply the knowledge of ‘Principles of Tribology’ for reduction of friction and wear in the process engineering, manufacturing and production engineering and automotive engineering fields.
  7. Knowledge of proper engineering materials having better corrosion resistance and sustainability and implement the effective measures to minimize the corrosion wherever possible.

Course Outcomes of Engineering Chemistry Lab (CHP 101)

After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Conversant with various chemical processes involved in qualitative as well as quantitative analysis of different materials, water pertaining to various impurities and properties of combustible fluids and to record the information in the scientific way.
  2. Understand applicability of different physico-chemical properties of fluids such as viscosity and flash point for various industrial machineries.

Course Outcomes of Environmental Studies-I and II (CHT201 and CHT202)

  1. Students will get the sufficient information that will clarify modern environmental concepts like equitable use of natural resources, more sustainable life styles etc.
  2. Students will realize the need to change their approach so as to perceive our own environmental issues correctly, using practical approach based on observation and self learning.
  3. Students become conversant with the fact that there is a need to create a concern for our environment that will trigger pro-environmental action; including simple activities we can do in our daily life to protect it
  4. By studying environmental sciences, students is exposed to the environment that enables one to find out solution of various environmental problems encountered on and often.
  5. At the end of the course, it is expected that students will be able to identify and analyze environmental problems as well as the risks associated with these problems and efforts to be taken to protect the environment from getting polluted. This will enable every human being to live in a more sustainable manner.

Course Outcomes of Non‐Conventional Energy Sources and Environmental Pollution (CHT300-2)

  1. Students will have knowledge of non‐conventional energy sources and their applicability as alternative sources of energy in the present scenario.
  2. Students will have hands on knowledge of principles involved in the generation and various sources of solar energy.
  3. In view of ever depleting conventional sources of energy, how students will be familiar with generation and applications of other renewable sources of energy like geothermal and wind energy.
  4. The students will have knowledge of air pollutants, their sampling, analysis and problems related to air pollution in different types of Industries.
  5. Students will be able to understand the environmental problems and management problems related to water and waste water technology.
  6. Students will be able to understand the environmental problems and management problems of nuclear fuels and wastes, knowledge of noise pollution, its effect on physical and mental health, its control and management.
