About Department

Vision:

To be a department of inspired learning that encourages the building of strong knowledgebase, inquisitiveness and critical thinking amongst students.

Mission:

To educate students for understanding chemical principles involved in engineering systems and also to make them aware about the global changes in the environment and its impact on the society.

Engineering Chemistry subject is taught in first/second semester of B.E. The basic objective of this subject is to develop necessary skills and abilities to succeed in engineering education. The emphasis is given on knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of chemistry and its applications in industry, environment and social context. The course content is based on strengthening the fundamental concepts of chemistry at atomic, electronic and molecular level for all engineering branches. This knowledgebase and its application in various engineering fields can aid in contributing to technological advancement.Some of the topics include atomic and molecular structure, interaction of radiation with matter through spectroscopic techniques, organic reactions and synthesis , stereochemistry, understanding the periodic properties etc.

The department has well equipped chemistry laboratory, departmental library and research laboratory. Two doctoral students have recently submitted their Ph.D. Thesis to RTM., Nagpur University during last academic session.

Applied Chemistry Laboratory is recognized testing centre for petroleum products from Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India. The department also undertakes analysis of water samples and cement, and other engineering materials.

Faculty

The department has two Associate Professors and five Assistant Professors and majority of them with doctoral degrees. The average experience of most of the faculty members of the departments is more than 15 years. Faculties of the department are actively engaged in research and other important assignments of the Institute. The areas of specialization and research interest of the faculty members are synthetic organic chemistry, physical, polymer and environmental chemistry. The faculty members have published research papers in the Scopus Indexed journals. One of the faculty members has authored text books on Applied Chemistry for engineering students. Beside this, faculty member have published two patents in the Indian Patent Journal, Govt. of India. The faculty members contributed in the Institution as member of ‘Admission Committee’, ‘Academic Council’, ‘Board of Studies’ , ‘Member of Local Management Committee’, ‘Officer In-Charge, Training and Placement Cell’, and different ‘Examination Committees’ of the Institute, etc.

Course Outcomes of Engineering Chemistry (CHT 151)

Upon successful completion of the course, the course will enable the student to:

  • Analyse microscopic chemistry in terms of atomic and molecular orbitals and intermolecular forces.
  • Rationalise bulk properties and processes using thermodynamic considerations.
  • Distinguish the ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum used for exciting different molecular energy levels in various spectroscopic techniques
  • Rationalise periodic properties such as ionization potential, electro negativity, oxidation states and electronegativity.
  • List major chemical reactions that are used in the synthesis of molecules.

Course Outcomes of Engineering Chemistry Lab (CHP 151)

The chemistry laboratory course will consist of experiments illustrating the principles of chemistry relevant to the study of science and engineering. The students will learn to: After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Estimate rate constants of reactions from concentration of reactants/products as a function of time
  • Measure molecular/system properties such as surface tension, viscosity, conductance of solutions, redox potentials and impurities in water etc.
  • Synthesize a polymer or drug molecule or nano-material.

Course Outcomes of Environmental Studies-I and II (CHT251 and CHT252)

On successful completion of the course, the students:
  1. Will get sufficient knowledge regarding different types of environmental pollutions, their causes, detrimental effects on environment and effective control measures.
  2. Will realize the need to change an individual’s outlook, so as to perceive our environmental issues correctly, using practical approach based on observations and self learning.
  3. Will become conversant with recent waste management techniques such as E-wastes, its recycling and management.
  4. Will gain knowledge about the modes for sustainable development, importance of green energy and processes.
  5. Will be able to identify and analyze environmental problems as well as risks associated with these problems and greener efforts to be adopted, to protect the environment from getting polluted.

Course Outcomes of Non‐Conventional Energy Sources and Environmental Pollution (CHT300-2)

  1. Students will have knowledge of non‐conventional energy sources and their applicability as alternative sources of energy in the present scenario.
  2. Students will have hands on knowledge of principles involved in the generation and various sources of solar energy.
  3. In view of ever depleting conventional sources of energy, how students will be familiar with generation and applications of other renewable sources of energy like geothermal and wind energy.
  4. The students will have knowledge of air pollutants, their sampling, analysis and problems related to air pollution in different types of Industries.
  5. Students will be able to understand the environmental problems and management problems related to water and waste water technology.
  6. Students will be able to understand the environmental problems and management problems of nuclear fuels and wastes, knowledge of noise pollution, its effect on physical and mental health, its control and management.
